Mooloolaba Outrigger Canoe Club has added yet another chapter to its outstanding achievements by being named Club Champions at the 2023 National Marathon Championships at Mooloolaba (Qld).
Traditionally one of Australia’s strongest outrigger clubs, Mooloolaba’s women’s, men’s and novice crews scored 17 medals, including eight gold, in the prestigious OC6 short and long course events – 10 km and 18 km respectively – conducted in the open ocean.
A further six gold, three silver and four bronze medals were won by Mooloolaba men and women in the OC1/2 and V1 events.
More than 900 registered paddlers competed at the nationals.
Mooloolaba’s points tally for the event was 503 followed by Outrigger Australia (281), Noosa (244) and Hekili (243).
“A number of factors – pride, passion, dedication and teamwork – are the hallmark of our club and they shone through at the national titles,” said Mooloolaba president Al Rasmussen.
“We have outstanding coaches who are undoubtedly one of the keys to the club’s success with their structured approach.”
Mooloolaba Outrigger Canoe Club was formed in 1990 with around 20 members and one borrowed canoe. Today the club has more than 160 active members and is represented in paddling events across the globe.
