Why Outrigger Canoe Paddling?

By 1908 the first outrigger canoe clubs were founded; Outrigger Canoe Club of Hawaii and Hui Nalu. Hawaii became the birthplace of contemporary outrigger canoe club racing, with a governing body being established in 1950, known today as the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association.

There are an estimated 25,000 outrigger canoe paddlers worldwide and the sport is currently experiencing huge growth.

Australia’s reputation as one of the leading countries in the world within ocean sports has ensured rapid and successful growth since its introduction to Australia in 1976. Today there are some 4,700 registered paddlers incorporating Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory, the ACT and South Australia, spread amongst more than 45 outrigger clubs.

Past & Future

The Mooloolaba Outrigger Canoe Club Inc. was formed in 1990 with approximately 20 active members who met for training on a vacant block of land on the Mooloolah River at Kawana with one borrowed canoe.

From these humble beginnings, the club has grown to around 200 active members with teams competing around the world in all divisions making the Mooloolaba Outrigger Canoe Club one of Australia’s largest and strongest.

Members come from Brisbane to Noosa and the club has a very successful novice programme to attract new members.

The club is immensely proud of it’s junior members. This success has been driven by a plan of recruiting and coaching under the direction of Australia’s most experienced paddlers and coaches.

The future of the sport here in Mooloolaba is in safe hands with the impressive combination of success and junior recruitment.

The success of our junior development has finally seen the grooming of our Juniors into fine Open division paddlers, ensuring the future of our sport.

And in 2013, Mooloolaba OCC was the first club in Australia to launch a program for adaptive paddlers, giving those with physical disabilities the opportunity to both train and race outrigger canoes at a competitive level.
